Resume Tantrums
Is your resume experiencing tantrums? You can bet your employer is not. He does not read resumes with tantrums. This kind of resume ends up in a recycle bin. No happy end for these guys.
Resume with tantrums is wild, loud and ugly. Nobody likes to be face to face with it. Instead, they run away screaming.
You can tell I have been reading a book about parenting. I do this a lot. No, my baby is not throwing tantrums yet. I am just preparing myself. Reading about tantrums and imagining possible scenarios made me find the least common denominator of most bad resumes that I have experienced in my professional life. I say experienced, because it is kind of a physical sensation for me. I think everybody must have a good, communicative resume. It is part of a professional hygiene, sort of like having a shower or brushing your teeth or ironing your clothes.
?? Contemplate ??
Before you start writing your resume contemplate on the subject of what you want to achieve with this resume. What kind of role you want to play in the happy collective of your choice?
… Research …
Second thing to do is investigate. Research the role you want to play. Is there anything specific about it? Be typical or be completely different but with a good cause. You should also investigate the company and if there are some specific rules about your wannabe role in it.
<< Wear It >> It should fit like a glove
With all of the above in mind, refine your personal note and compose your original role to fit in the employer’s mind-set.
@ Focus @
Concentrate. Make a solid little cluster around your role. Build on your role. Everything you write or say must be in sync and a logical continuation of what was before. If there is something out of the ordinary, make it extraordinary. Make it The Thing to do.
In the next installment I will (probably) write about “How not to loose yourself”. I want to keep you at the edge of your seats. Suspense is building up. I will make it a whodunit, my favorite genre. I am so, so sophisticated (wink, wink)
