How To Become | PR

You probably thought I wrote about career in public relations. You were right.

Did you know that most PR officers are female?

Does this mean that women are more talented or just more interested for building goodwill?

Do you think there is plenty of goodwill in the world around you? They want to bring about some more.

I guess you all know what is PR, but just in case there is one person still unsure I am writing the shortest possible explanation:

Public relations is all about communication. PR officers create, guard and manage organization’s goodwill.

What makes a person want to become a PR officer? I don’t know, I never had this ambition. Apparently, many people are unlike me and they are very keen on PR business. That is why entry into PR is very competitive. Far more people want to do this sort of work than there are opportunities. Anyway, you should not let this discourage you. I am sure that one clever PR wannabe will know how to create a market for oneself :)

Personal attributes for successful career in PR:

> enterprise and initiative, sense of salesmanship

> good news sense

> getting on well with people (all kinds of people - this takes some training and experience), a calm temperament, tact and ability to remain polite when provoked or under pressure

> analytical powers, ability to write and speak well and persuasively, rich imagination.

Public relations officers work either:

> in public relations consultancies

> in public relations departments of advertising agencies

> in public relations departments of individual organizations

If you still want to take your chances with PR, these are the possible entry routes:

> A sideways move with a degree and work experience in a relevant discipline or industry (e.g. engineering or science). Traditionally many PR people moved sideways from journalism, but this is the thing of the past.

> As a trainee with a PR firm or in a PR department. Useful degree subjects are business, economics, languages, communication, and everything else :)

> With a degree or postgraduate degree course in PR.

The best PR scenario is the first I mentioned above. Solid knowledge and work experience in a relevant industry will provide quality PR work.

It is a great career opportunity for seasoned professionals who need a career change.
